A new digital art museum featuring “borderless” exhibitions is to open in Tokyo, Japan this summer.

Real estate developer Mori Building has partnered experimental art collective TeamLab to launch Mori Building Digital Art Musem TeamLab Borderless in Odaiba, Tokyo.

The museum will be TeamLab’s first permanent exhibition and will boast a 10,000 sq m of floor space. According to a press release, the word “borderless” expresses the museum’s aim to tear down the borders between “one art and another”, “art and visitors” and “oneself and others” by allowing visitors to “melt into the art and become part of it”.

Mori Building and TeamLab hope that their museum will inspire people to create “enlightened new values and innovative new social frameworks”.

Takashi Kudo, TeamLab’s communications director, told CNN: “Every day will be a different experience. There are different monitors and projectors (and) people can become part of the work. It’s borderless and transcends boundaries.

“When you create something, there are already boundaries. If you make it on canvas, there are boundaries; if you make a sculpture, you can’t change it. But for digital (art), you can always change, because the digital world doesn’t really exist. We want to really bring people inside our artworks.”

TeamLab is a collective of artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects founded in 2001 that refer to themselves as “ultratechnologists”. Their works seeks to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology, design and the natural world.

The museum will look to expand upon ideas and technologies used from the collective’s previous work, which includes installations shown in galleries in London, Sydney and Istanbul.
