Hamilton: The Exhibition has opened in Chicago, with interactive visuals, games and sets.

The exhibit provides an in-depth look at the history behind the musical, which portrays Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers.

Located on Chicago’s Lake Michigan shoreline, the attraction is set in a specially constructed 35,000-square-foot structure.

As ‘Hamilfans’ waited in line on opening day (April 27), the man behind the Broadway musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda, turned up with donuts to feed those queuing.

The exhibit itself includes an audio guide narrated by Miranda and original cast members Phillipa Soo (Eliza Schuyler) and Christopher Jackson (George Washington).

Joanne B Freeman, historical advisor and Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University, also narrates.

It also features a reworked instrumental version of the soundtrack, and 3D footage of Miranda and the Washington DC cast performing the musical’s opening number.

With a dynamic and interactive mix of lighting, sound, multimedia, music and historical artifacts, visitors to the exhibit will experience how it felt to write the way Hamilton wrote, fight the way Hamilton fought, and live the way Hamilton lived.

What to expect at Hamilton: The Exhibition:

  • Travel through the Schyler Sister’s parlour, meeting Alexander and his wife Eliza.
  • Walk through a neon-lit hallway dedicated to England’s King George.
  • Discover how Hamilton’s work as a trader in St Croix gave him the skills to create the US financial system.
  • Look upon the streets of New York with detailed replicas of the city in 1776.
  • Step into George Washington’s war tent and learn how the Revolutionary Army planned their shocking victory in the Battle of Yorktown.

Hamilton: The Exhibition cost $13.5 million – $1m more than the Broadway show, which cost $12.5 million.

The exhibit will likely stay in Chicago for several months before visiting cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles.
