Leading designer and manufacturer of retractable roofs and skylights, OpenAire is celebrating the opening of the Hyatt House Jersey City Hotel.

The 258-roomed hotel offers guests panoramic views of New York City across the Hudson River, thanks to OpenAire’s 3,520-square-foot glass enclosure with retractable roof.

Built in three telescoping sections, the roof can be opened and closed at the touch of a button. The walls to the adjacent rooftop terrace can also be folded completely open to provide uninterrupted city views.

When the weather is less favourable, the expansive glass still provides those excellent views of the Manhattan skyline but from the comfort of a temperature-controlled environment. This makes the space perfectly usable even in the depths of winter.

Increasing year-round appeal

Located in the Exchange Place neighbourhood of Jersey City, the hotel occupies the 97-year-old former First National Bank of Jersey City. With its combination of classical architecture, modern facilities and exceptional rooftop views, the conversion will no doubt breathe new life, and bring new business, into the heart of the city. OpenAire’s retractable roof is also likely to increase its year-round appeal.

Hyatt House is one of an increasing number of venues and attractions looking to differentiate their offer in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Waterparks and other leisure facilities are also looking at retractable enclosures as a way to transform seasonal venues into year-round attractions.

A recent success is indoor waterpark Epic Waters in Texas, housed in a vast OpenAire enclosure with retractable roof. Since opening, guests are regularly queuing round the block to enjoy its amenities which are available come rain or shine.

Based in Toronto, Canada, OpenAire has been designing and manufacturing retractable roof structures and skylights for 28 years. The company has completed close to 1,000 projects throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East with many more in the pipeline.
