Special Venue Media: National Space Centre Planetarium Becomes latest Global Immersion DIY Install

News

The latest fulldome solution to be supplied by Global Immersion and installed by the client has opened to the public at the National Space Centre in Leicester.  The Space Theatre is the UK’s largest planetarium and now home to a six-channel Fidelity Bright™ projection system.

The National Space Centre has six interactive galleries dedicated to space exploration.  Holding the title of the UK’s largest planetarium, the 165-seat ‘Space Theatre’ facility presents a number of fulldome feature presentations, in addition to hosting high-profile movie and sci-fi conventions.

The National Space Centre is also home to one of the world’s most prolific creators of award winning fulldome and planetarium shows. Currently shows created in Leicestershire are showing at over 140 venues in twenty countries, so making the requirement for the best projection system in their home location paramount.

Six Fidelity™ projectiondesign® projectors were supplied to upgrade the existing CRT system. Following a full mechanical design layout of the theater’s display configuration and training of their technical team at theGlobal Immersion head office, the factory-matched projectors and turn-key blending solution were shipped to site. The new Fidelity projection display was then integrated to run from the existing Digistar 3 backend system.

Tony Scott, Senior Project Manager at Global Immersion explained; “The key elements of this project were ensuring that the new display was well designed, employed optimum equipment, and was fully compatible with the ‘Space Theatre’s’ existing system. In an installation such as this where the client integrates the technology themselves, we need to be certain that everything is primed, programmed and pre-calibrated as much as possible before delivery – minimizing on-site support from our end and keeping them within budget.”

Scott continued; “The technical team at the National Space Centre have been an excellent team to work with. Their enthusiasm, commitment and ability to complete the installation made for a great team effort, and their involvement throughout this upgrade has been really impressive.”

Chas Bishop, CEO at the National Space Centre added; “It has been great to show off our fulldome presentations via a projection system which is so sharp.  Global Immersion has provided great expertise to a complex process and the results are really impressive.”
