Cable car Floriade

Floriade 2022, the international horticultural exhibition, will be giving visitors a chance to find out more about the event, thanks to the new Floriade Preview, which is now open.

A unique cable car ride will allow guests to get a bird’s eye view of the 60-hectare site from a height of 35 metres, where they will be able to see a sneak peek of its rectangular allotment structure and the arboretum.

Floriade Preview will be open Thursday to Sunday, up to and including 26 September 2021. The event aims to bring Floriade 2022’s themes to life, as well as to connect with Almere and the Province of Flevoland.

Visitors will be able to explore the Preview Centre, which will show the ‘making of’ Floriade and the green urban district, Hortus. Floriade preview also includes a trip across the Weerwater from Almere Stad to the Floriade site and a guided tour of Utopia island, in addition to the trip on the cable car.

Utopia island showcases several initiatives regarding the food supply in the city, including an Agroforestry plot. This is a form of circular agriculture between trees and shrubs. Walnut trees, hop bushes, herbs, potatoes and carrots are some of the species that thrive under this model, where food supply and ecosystem recovery are in sync.

The hops grown here are used by the Almere beers, while food harvested goes to the Almere food bank. The island also features a Tiny Forest and a food forest, with many different types of edible plants and herbs.

Floriade 2022 will take place in Almere in the Netherlands, from 14 April to 9 October next year. The event’s theme is Growing Green Cities. Working with international participants and national organisations, Floriade will present solutions for sustainable and livable cities.
