The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, Russia has launched a new experimental programme and online platform called Garage Digital, which will host works by digital artists.

Garage Digital will bring together artists, scientists, programmers and art historians. It aims to explore and support the visual culture that is emerging with advanced technology and new media.

According to a press release, the traditional museum has lost its monopoly as a place to store imagery, with smartphones and the internet providing access to content.

“The Garage Digital team, together with artists and experts, is redefining the role of cultural institutions and means of creating and exhibiting works of art,” said Anton Belov, director of the Garage Museum.

“Launched in 2019, this programme is focused on digital reality, but that does not mean we are choosing between online and offline presence.

“For Garage they are of equal importance. In essence, the Garage Digital platform is a space within the museum, with its own exhibition and education programs.”

The online platform features artworks and research projects created for Garage Digital, as well as multimedia material on digital art and culture, and documentary videos.

Garage Digital will also have offline events at the museum and other locations, in order to build a community of digital and new technology artists.

In addition, the project includes a grant programme for artists who work with new technology. Each season will focus on a particular aspect of artistic practice in the digital environment.

For the launch, Garage Digital will feature new projects and digital artworks created for the exhibition ‘The Coming World’, which examines the relationships between contemporary art and environmentalism.

This will feature ‘Xerces Blau’, a four-part work produced by musician James Ferraro and artist Ezra Miller, immersing viewers in a world facing an ecological crisis caused by pollution and technological overproduction.

It will also include Gints Gabrāns‘ app ‘FOOOD 2050’, the ‘Russian Ferations’ interactive map by Posthuman Studies Lab, and ‘Those Who’ – an online version of Sascha Pohflepp’s multimedia installation produced with artificial intelligence (AI).

Elsewhere, Sands Resorts Macao and teamLab are opening permanent interactive experience teamLab SuperNature at The Venetian Macao in February 2020.
