The Sainsbury Wing, a Grade I-listed building, will become the institution’s permanent new entrance.

London’s National Gallery is to undergo a major makeover ahead of its bicentenary celebrations in 2024, with the plans unanimously approved by Westminster City Council.

The Sainsbury Wing, a Grade I-listed building on St Martin’s Street, will become the institution’s permanent new entrance.

The proposals by Selldorf Architects will also create a new accessible connection between the Sainsbury Wing and the Wilkins Building.

In addition, the National Gallery will add a new members’ house and research centre. The public spaces outside the gallery will become more welcoming and accessible, and there will be a new public square in front of the Sainsbury Wing.

“We all miss out when anyone thinks that the National Gallery is not for them,” said Gabriele Finaldi, the National Gallery’s director.

“Selldorf Architects’ thoughtful interventions will help to make the gallery entrance lighter, more accessible, and more visible as a public space.

“We are delighted that Westminster City Council agrees with us that this transformation of the gallery’s entrance will improve the experience of visitors to the borough.”

The artworks in the Sainsbury Wing have been temporarily transferred. The most popular and significant paintings are on display elsewhere in the gallery.

Principal of Selldorf Architects, Annabelle Selldorf, added: “The exchange we have had over the last 18 months with all those who care about the Gallery, not just in Westminster, but around the world, is echoed in our plans and its dialogue with the existing buildings.

“We have retained the essential quality and features of the Sainsbury Wing whilst creating a space and arrival sequence that is welcoming to all.”

Earlier this year, the National Gallery joined other cultural institutions in London in cutting ties with the Sacklers, a billionaire family accused of making a profit from the US opioid epidemic.
