The Rubell Museum in Miami is opening a new museum dedicated to contemporary art in Washington, DC on 29 October 2022.

The Rubell Museum DC will be home to exhibitions featuring paintings, sculptures, videos and photographs from the Rubells’ collection. It will boast more than 7,400 works.

Residents of Washington, DC will receive free admission to the museum, located less than a mile from the Capitol and National Mall.

The Rubell Museum DC joins art museums in the city such as the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, National Gallery of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The 32,000-square-foot museum will be housed in the former Cardozo Elementary and later Randall Junior High School, which were in operation between 1906 and 1978.

Rubells’ collection coming soon to DC

The new location will feature exhibition galleries and public programming, as well as a bookstore and café.

“Creating a museum for sharing our collection with the people who live and work in our nation’s capital and those who visit the city from across the US and around the world fulfils a longtime dream for us,” said Mera Rubell.

“We are truly excited to be joining the community of outstanding museums in the city and adding a public resource that explores contemporary life, issues, and ideas.”

Beyer Blinder Belle is the design architect for the museum and an adjacent apartment building called Gallery 64.

The Rubell Museum opened in Miami in December 2019. It first launched in 1993 as the Rubell Family Collection. The museum is home to 36 galleries, as well as a performance space, research library, bookstore and restaurant.

Meanwhile, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino is set to open its first gallery at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC.
