The Belvedere Museum in Vienna is going to open a new branch in the Salzburg Museum.
The Salzburg Museum’s supervisory board and the Belvedere’s board of trustees announced the project earlier this year. A competition will be held for the €30 million design.
A new exhibition area to be built
The new exhibition at the Salzburg Museum will show works from the Middle Ages to the present day, Monopol reports. It will be a stand-alone collection that uses pieces from the Belvedere’s permanent holdings
A new exhibition area will be constructed to house the new collection. This will involve adapting and renovating a large section of the Salzburg Museum. ARTnews reports that the east wing and inner courtyard will need to be renovated.
€30 million project to invite architectural proposals
The project is currently estimated to cost around 30 million euros.
Architectural firms will be invited to submit proposals for the project from spring 2021. The museum plans to announce a winner in November 2021.
Stella Rolling, CEO of the Belvedere museum, said that “with the establishment of the Belvedere Salzburg, despite difficult times, an important building block is being laid for the museum landscape in Austria. The future art facility contributes significantly to the increased visibility of the Belvedere Collection outside of Vienna.”
The new branch is expected to be completed in 2026.
The Belvedere museum is housed in the Baroque Belvedere palace complex. It features the world’s greatest collection of Austrian art, including the largest selection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings.
