From nature trails and free city tours to a swimming pool and movie theatre, Singapore’s Changi Airport already offers an above average selection of ways to while away a stopover. But now something really exciting is coming, something almost worth missing your flight for.

Opening in early 2019, Jewel is an all-weather lifestyle attraction featuring world-class play attractions and gardens inside an air-conditioned dome-shaped building constructed of glass and steel. Both travellers and local residents will be able to enjoy its unique offerings inside a distinctive 134,000 square-metre building designed by architect Moshe Safdie.

Dining outlets and retail wil be featured alongside walking trails, mazes, play areas and greenery galore. In line with Singapore’s reputation as “a City in a Garden”, Jewel will house one of the largest indoor collections of plants in the city.

Taking pride of place when it comes to activities and attractions will be Sky Nets, Canopy Mazes and Discovery Slides. This will be located in a 14,000 sq m area called Canopy Park. Each has been designed to blend into Jewel’s lush greenery.

Sky Nets combines a bouncing and walking net, the first time such a combination has been done on such a scale in an indoor environment. The highlight will be the thrill of walking over a void and looking down 25m. The suppliers of this attraction are Officium (walking net) and Chien Noir (bouncing net).

The Canopy Mazes, by Adrian Fisher Design (UK), comprises both a hedge maze and a mirror maze. The latter will be the first of its kind in a garden environment, while the hedge maze will be the largest in Singapore. Planted 30m above ground level, the hedges will be 1.8m in height. An elevated watch tower will offers visitors with a bird’s eye view of the maze as they help others through its labyrinth-like layout.

Meanwhile the Discovery Slides will offer both a playground and a magnificent art sculpture. Designed by Carve in The Netherlands and built by Playpoint of Singapore, four 8m-high slides will be harmonised in a garden environment for the pleasure of adults and children alike.

Also featured at Jewel will be open areas allowing young children to wander amidst the greenery. One of such area, known as Foggy Bowls, will have gentle mist-shrouded concave bowls ranging from 0.3 to 0.65m in depth, designed by The Exploratorium of San Francisco.

Rounding up the list of attractions will be the 23m high, 50m long Canopy Bridge. This will offer visitors will an excellent vantage point to enjoy the breathtaking Rain Vortex display which flows through the centre of the building. Glass panel flooring in the centre portion of the bridge for visitors to look right through to the first level of Jewel.

About 22,000 sq m of space will be dedicated to landscaping throughout the complex. About half of the total landscaping and greenery in Jewel will be at Canopy Park, which boasts over 1,400 trees and palms. Part of the lush offerings will also comprise two specially created gardens, the Topiary Walk and Petal Garden.

Construction of the Jewel complex has already begun in front of Terminal 1 of the airport, where an expanded arrival hall will be seamlessly integrated with level 1 of the development, In addition, Jewel will also be physically linked to the departure halls of Terminals 2 and 3 via pedestrian bridges and travellators.
