The Glendale City Council has approved plans for Crystal Lagoons, Island Resort. The development includes a huge water park, hotel, dining, retail and rides, and is set to open in late 2022.

Glendale, a city in Arizona’s Maricopa County, voted unanimously to approve the project on Tuesday (September 8).

The main feature of the project will be an 11-acre water park, also called a ‘Public Access Lagoon’ (PAL). The huge crystalline lagoons are surrounded by white sand beaches, and can be accessed via ticketed entry.

The plans call for more than 600 hotel rooms, amusement park rides, Fly and 4D theaters, and an enormous helium balloon offering aerial views.

In addition, Aerophile’s Aerobar will offer F&B at 130-feet in the air. There will also be office space, retail shops, restaurants and bars at the attraction, near the Westgate Entertainment District.

The company behind the water park is Crystal Lagoons, and the developer is ECL Glendale. Crystal Lagoons has other developments around the world, including in Dubai, Japan, Brazil and South Korea.

“It brings a new level of adventure, recreation and entertainment that complements our vision for the Westgate area,” said City Council member Joyce Clark.

“I thank our new, visionary partners for their confidence in Glendale as their location of choice.”

“Not only will this be a great example of experiential retail, which is the only area of growth in brick and mortar development over the past 10 years, but this project further cements Westgate as the largest sports and entertainment district in Arizona,” said Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps.

Crystal Lagoons, Island Resort is expected to create 1,800 jobs when it opens. It is scheduled to break ground later this year, opening by October 2022.

Crystal Lagoons vice president, Eric Cherasia, said the company is excited to bring the “first branded Crystal Lagoons, Island Resort entertainment destination to Glendale”.

“As you will see in our announcements over the next few months, we have teamed with some of the world’s top attraction, entertainment, and hospitality brands to create the next wave in entertainment destinations,” added Cherasia.
