A new digital tourism installation at Dubai International airport entices passengers to return the city.

The ‘MyDubai Experience’ installation at Terminal 3 of DXB allows transit travellers to explore Dubai without leaving the airport

MyDubai Experience has been created by Dubai’s Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism), in collaboration with Dubai Airports and Emirates Airline.

Passengers transiting through the airport will be able to explore the city virtually. The digital installation can also create and email potential visitors a tailor-made two-day itinerary based on their tastes.

The aim is to offer an innovative way for travellers to explore the city without taking a single step outside the terminal. The hope is that the millions of passengers passing through the airport will be encouraged to come back to Dubai in the near future for a holiday.

The installation is located in one of the busiest parts of Terminal 3. It measures six metres in height and four metres in diameter and is made up of state-of-the-art LED tiles that combine to form five 360-degree rings. Each ring shows a range of photographic, video, social media and user-generated content. The rings can produce one large visual or can operate independently, making a collage of different Dubai experiences. Below the rings are an extra seven 55” curved OLED screens alongside seven 22” touchscreens, available in eight different languages. Users can register and access more information by email. This automatically enters them into a monthly draw for the prize of a luxury holiday for two in Dubai.

“Dubai International is the world’s busiest airport for international passengers, and with millions of travellers transiting in Dubai every year, there is a huge market waiting to be tapped,” said Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM). “Our aim is to encourage these passengers to enjoy an extended stopover in Dubai, to exit the airport and experience the city.”

He added that they hope travellers will see their transit in Dubai in a fresh light. “We want them to view their transit in Dubai not as an unwanted delay in their travels from A to B, but as a fantastic opportunity to add value to their journey,” he added. “The MyDubai Experience is the perfect way for them to get a glimpse of all that is possible in this great city, no matter what their budget or interest.”

The installation will continue to evolve. New plans include two ‘photo booths’ where visitors can take images of themselves overlaid with a range of filters, to be shared on social media channels.

The airport is certainly leading the way with innovative tech. Last October Blooloop reported that Dubai airport was swapping conventional security clearance procedures for a virtual aquarium tunnel that scans passengers’ faces as they walk through.
