Disney Park Pass System: Park hopping suspended, Magic Bands replaced by mobile app

Walt Disney World know before you go poster

As Walt Disney World prepares for the phased reopening of its theme parks beginning on July 11, more information about the Disney Park Pass System has been released. Park hopping will be suspended and, from 2021, resort hotel guests will be using the My Disney Experience mobile app instead of getting free Magic Bands.

In order to limit capacity within the theme parks, all guests will have to make advance reservations using the Disney Park Pass System online tool.

Each member of a party must have a valid ticket and park reservation to enter a park when they reopen. Friends and families can link their tickets through their My Disney Experience account to reserve an entry together.

Park hopping suspended

However, park hopping has been temporarily suspended, as guests may only make reservations for one park each day. Anyone who has purchased a Park Hopper Option on their ticket will be able to modify or cancel their ticket.

The online reservation system will open at different times for different guests. Those who are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel will be able to make reservations first on June 22, with Annual Passholders following on June 26 and existing ticket holders on June 28.

Entry reservations will be available until September 26 2021. Ticket sales for 2020 will resume later in the summer based on the availability of park reservations.

From Magic Bands to mobile app

On June 28, tickets and hotel packages will be on sale for 2021 arrivals. However, guests staying in a Walt Disney World hotel from January 1 2021 will no longer be given a free MagicBand.

Instead, the company is planning to add a new feature to the My Disney Experience app that will include MagicBand features.

This is part of Disney’s plan to explore “engaging ways for guests to use their mobile tech to experience the magic”.  Using smartphones, wearable technology and the IoT, Disney plans to transform the guest’s theme park experience.

Disney Springs is already open at Walt Disney World, and it has been testing a new contactless security check system.
