Ecsite launches online initiatives ahead of virtual conference

Ecsite, the European network of science centres and museums, is working on a new set of virtual resources to keep members engaged – #EcsiteOnline.

Ecsite is pleased to announce that it is creating a new set of initiative and alternatives, such a weekly webinar series, in order to keep members connected and inspired during the coronavirus pandemic.

The weekly webinars are shaped by the Ecsite community and will take place every Wednesday on the network’s crowdcast platform, at 15.00 CEST. They will also be available to watch online after, at any time.

Inspiring programming

The series kicks off with a session on decolonising museums and science communication, which is scheduled for 13 May.

This will explore how the museum community can work to decolonise our its collections and exhibitions. It will look at questions such as how, if or when objects collected in colonial contexts should be returned to their countries of origin. This webinar will be curated by Amparo Leyman Pino and Anna Schäfers. Places can be booked here.

This will be followed by a webinar on 20 May, looking at audience research and COVID-19, curated by Marie Hobson of London’s Natural History Museum. The session will discuss how to conduct research with populations under lockdown. Places can be booked here.

Future sessions include:

  • 27 May: Equity & diversity – curated by the Equity@Ecsite group
  • 3 June: Digital presence – curated by Stephane Berghmans, Technopolis (Mechelen, Belgium) and François Quéré, Universcience (Paris, France)
  • 10 June: Misinformation – more information coming soon

Connecting members

The network is designing an app to connect members, which will launch ahead of the virtual conference in June. Ecsite is also running informal drop-ins for members every Tuesday at 15.00 CEST.

On 11 June, there will be a full day of sessions and networking opportunities, from 10.00 to 19.00 CEST, followed by a day focussing on business opportunities on 19 June from 10.00 to 19.00 CEST.

The Ecsite Board made the decision to cancel Ecsite 2020, which was due to take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 11 – 13 June, due to COVID-19.
