Work began yesterday on the expansion project at the Dundee Science Centre – following a fundraising campaign.

The ambitious £2 million project will deliver a new science learning facility. It will also create a new interactive exhibition showing Dundee’s pioneering work in medical technology.

The project will take seven-months. It will double the amount of floor space on the upper level.

The expanded upper level of the Dundee Science Centre will combine a new exhibition with demonstrations, ‘meet-the-expert’ opportunities and hands-on activities. There will also be professional development opportunities for trainee and practising scientists and educationalists.

The new spaces will house a new exhibition focused on technological developments that assist and improve surgery and medicine. As part of this, the centre will develop a medical operating theatre for minimal access surgery, dissection, endoscopic and laparoscopic exhibits

The new spaces will also house an 80 seat lecture theatre, learning zones and drop in centres.

Funding came from multiple sources. The Wellcome Trust made the initial contribution of £850,000. The redevelopment has also received £248,000 from the Scottish Government. The remainder was made up by Dundee City Council, Scottish Enterprise and the Robertson Trust.

“This is an extremely exciting time in Dundee Science Centre’s evolution and we are thrilled to have reached this milestone,” said chief executive Linda Leuchars.

“It is particularly fitting that we will be celebrating local science which is making a global impact, while bringing a diverse cross-spectrum of people together to enjoy science. As a registered independent charity, we are of course delighted to have achieved our ambitious fundraising targets and would like to thank each and every one of our funders and supporters.”

The new space and exhibition are set to open in the spring of 2018. The centre will remain open to visitors during the construction.
