Sri Lanka is set to welcome a $4m state-of-the-art family entertainment attraction, Fantasy Island, located in the Colombo suburb of Battaramulla.

Sri Lanka’s state-owned Board of Investment (BOI) has revealed it signed an agreement with foreign investors to build the entertainment park.

In a statement, the BOI said the project will be handled by Sri Lanka’s Melchers Group, who will construct Fantasy Island at an investment of $4 million.

It’s hoped Fantasy Island will strengthen Sri Lanka’s tourism, with attractions such as a 40-metre Ferris wheel, an indoor snow experience, and a large water play area, which will include water slides.

Located at Waters Edge, the development is set to open within one year, and will be themed to the elements air, sea, and land.

“Sri Lanka has made great progress to build hotels and infrastructure. Now, the Fantasy Island is the beginning of the next development phase of the tourism industry,” said Alexander Melchers, Managing Director of Melchers Group and founding investor of Fantasy Island.

“We will provide a purpose-built, state-of-the-art family entertainment attraction to cater for international and local tourists and residents. I am very confident in the business outlook in Sri Lanka,” he added.

“We represent German, Singaporean, and Swiss investors who believe in the long term potential of Sri Lanka.”

Investing in Sri Lanka’s tourism offering

Michael Perera, Chairman of CMC Engineering Export (the Sri Lankan office of Melchers Group), said: “In phase 1, the investment of more than $4 million will bring inclusive attractions for the entire family which are truly unique to Sri Lanka.

“Fantasy Island will create over 60 employment and career development opportunities for the community.”

Fantasy Island is expected to break ground later this year, with completion set for around this time next year.
