Fantasy Island’s projection mapped Mystical Mountain!

Fantasy Island Mountain

The UK amusement park Fantasy Island has added a twice-daily show to encourage guests to stay longer, whatever the weather.

Located at Ingoldmells near Skegness, the indoor-outdoor east coast park features a central building topped by a pyramid. The roof of the former atrium space has been covered to create an atmospheric and relaxing area. It’s one of several improvements made this season across the facility by The Mellors Group, which took control one year ago.

The Mystical Mountain has been created out of an existing 40ft (12.1m) high themed mountainous themed. In the process, Fantasy Island has gained a new feature area and twice-daily show, produced by Holovis.

The projection mapped shows are performed at 1pm and 9.30pm. In addition, during the day the mountain can be seen “sleeping” with butterflies sweeping past and lizards inhabiting the lower rock faces. Within the show sequences, larva eruptions and gushing water are integrated with lighting, audio and other effects. The park’s entertainment offer already continues after dark, but now the Mystical Mountain gives guests another reason to stay into the evening, resulting in increase in an increased spend per head.

“We wanted a new feature that would augment the visitor experience and have certainly found it within the projection mapped show,” says Mellors Group director Edward Mellors. “This dynamic visualisation is something that many of our guests have never seen before so they plan their day around attending the evening show. It’s great to have a none weather dependent feature.”

Holovis produced the whole experience, starting with the narrative that underpins the show. Meanwhile artists from Holovis Media created the lovable character of The Mystical Mountain. Bringing the show and its visuals to life are three Barco F90 laser based projectors and a Green Hippo Hippotiser.

“The uneven mountain area was not an easy surface to projection map on to,” notes Holovis creative director Peter Cliff. “We first captured a scan of the area then worked from the point source data obtained. The result is a multipurpose canvas that Fantasy Island can easily update with new seasonal shows throughout the year.”
