After a decade of filming in Northern Ireland, the hit drama Game of Thrones is wrapping up – and HBO has announced its plans to convert several filming locations into tourist attractions called Game of Thrones Legacy.

The Emmy® Award-winning series has masses of devoted fans, who will now be able to visit the world of Westeros at the Game of Thrones Legacy attractions.

Game of Thrones has ran a number of live branded experiences, including the Touring Exhibition and Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience, which were both successful. Drawing from this, HBO will open up the production archives for visitors.

The Game of Thrones Legacy attractions will be larger than anything similar, and will open the filming locations to the public for the first time. Guests will be able to go behind the scenes to find out how the world’s biggest TV show was made.

As well as the sets, attractions will also display costumes, props, weapons, set decorations, art files, models, and other production materials.

Digital content and interactive materials will enhance the visitor experience and the digital wizardry that the series is famous for.

“Celebrate Northern Ireland”

Jeff Peters, Vice President of Licensing and Retail at HBO, said: “HBO is thrilled to celebrate the work of the Game of Thrones creative team and crew by preserving these locations and inviting fans to visit Northern Ireland and explore Westeros in person. We look forward to opening the gates and sharing the excitement of stepping inside these amazing sets with Game of Thrones fans from around the world.  The opportunity to celebrate Northern Ireland’s pivotal role in the life and legacy of the show and share its culture, beauty and warmth is also a huge inspiration behind these Legacy projects.”

John McGrillen, Chief Executive of Tourism NI, said: “We couldn’t be more excited about the Game of Thrones Legacy project coming to Northern Ireland. While fans have seen the stunning landscapes, coastlines and mountains in the series, we are thrilled they will now have the opportunity to fully experience the charm of Northern Ireland and immerse themselves in to the world of Westeros. The Game of Thrones Legacy project will be a game changer for Northern Ireland on a global tourism level. We very much welcome this exciting announcement by HBO and look forward to attracting many more visitors to our beautiful country as a result.”

Iconic locations such as Winterfell, Castle Black, and Kings Landing are planned to be including in the project. A studio tour of Linen Mill Studios is also planned that will showcase more from the series.

A targeted open date is currently set for 2019.

The attraction will hope to follow in the success of similar studio tours such as the Warner Bros Studio Tour.
