Genting Malaysia Bhd has revised the delayed opening of its outdoor theme park from Q4 2021 to Q2 2021.
Now called Genting SkyWorlds, the outdoor theme park was originally scheduled to open in Q3 2020. However due to the coronavirus pandemic, work was delayed and the opening was pushed back to Q4 2021.
Genting SkyWorlds will feature international movie-themed attractions
Originally conceived as a 21st Century Fox theme park, Genting SkyWorlds will still feature 21st Century Fox movies as well as unnamed “international class” movie-themed attractions according to The Edge Market.
This announcement was made at Genting Malaysia Bhd’s 40th annual general meeting by CFO Koh Poy Yong. She also explained that work on the theme park was delayed because construction was stopped due to the movement control order enacted on March 18 in Malaysia.
Construction delayed due to COVID-19
Travel restrictions that were also put into place because of COVID-19 delayed foreign consultants and specialists entering the country to work on the project.
However, construction has now resumed on the outdoor theme park and the company expects to open a year after originally expected.
Last year Genting Malaysia reached a settlement agreement with 21st Century Fox and The Walt Disney Company over the outdoor theme park.
The theme park was also reported to incur more capital expenditure last year, with costs going above $700 million to be completed.
