£59m Giant Panda visitor attraction to open May 2021 in Chengdu

Chengdu Beihu Panda International Tourism and Recreation Zone

The new Chengdu Beihu Panda International Tourism and Recreation Zone is set to open in May next year.

This resort is an expansion of the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base in the city of Chengdu. This base is extremely popular, with over 9 million visitors last year according to Sohu. This expansion will allow more visitors and more space for the animals.

Officials in Chengdu have put aside 530 million yuan, or £59 million, for the whole resort reports The Daily Mail. The new reserve will cover 35 square kilometres – nine times the size of Shanghai Disneyland – over three districts in China, Jinniu, Chenghua and Xindu.

The new Chengdu Beihu Panda International Tourism and Recreation Zone will be divided into six areas – a research area and five themed sections. At the Adventure Valley, visitors can experience an ecological panda house.

In the Hero Farm area, a lookout tour will allow visitors to have a bird’s eye view of the entire area. This watch tower will be 68 metres high. The design is inspired by a hibiscus flower, with the outer layers of the tower reflected the curved, overlapping petals of the flower.

The 180 giant pandas, 200 red pandas and 50 golden monkeys at the reserve will have over 3,500 acres of space to enjoy. The welfare of the pandas has been prioritised as each panda enclosure will be at least 800 square metres.

The new panda enclosures are built using ‘panda friendly’ construction materials to create authentic environments for the pandas. They will be circular enclosures with a modulated walkway to view the pandas from multiple levels.

Multiple viewing points for visitors

Bunker style viewing rooms will be sunken into the enclosures, giving visitors a close-up look at the pandas. A new glass panda delivery room will allow visitors an uninterrupted view of the baby pandas.

The resort will also feature a hotel, residential buildings and exhibition centres.

Plans for a Giant Panda National Park in Sichuan Province were announced in 2018. This National Park will be three times the size of Yellowstone National Park in America. It will give the pandas an unbroken area to roam and mate with other pandas.
