Gilmore Car Museum adding new $5m building for muscle cars

The Gilmore Car Museum in Michigan has announced it will be adding a new $5 million building to exhibit muscle cars, also known as high-performance cars. The attraction is expected to open in 2021.

According to the Gilmore Car Museum, the arrival of the muscle car marks a time in US history that should be “honoured and passed on”.

The museum, which boasts the largest vintage car collection in North America, said “we have yet to fully celebrate the grit, heat, and power of the 1960s and early ’70s muscle car era”.

Therefore, the Gilmore Car Museum is ‘adding some muscle’ to its 90-acre campus. The new building is scheduled to open in 2021, with groundbreaking set for summer 2020.

Expansion will have interactive exhibition space

When it arrives, the attraction will boast 25,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, and 3,000 square feet of changing exhibit space.

It will also house a replica dealership showroom, a vintage speed shop, and new restroom facilities.

Of the $5 million investment, $3m will go on museum construction, and $500,000 on professional exhibit design. The remaining $1.5m is for funds to increase endowment.

The Gilmore Car Museum is located in Hickory Corners in Michigan. It features classic and vintage automobiles, with more than 500 vehicles on display.

It currently has 20 muscle cars, with this figure expected to double when the expansion is complete.

Earlier this year, the Mullin Automotive Park at Enstone Airfield was given the go-ahead. The £150 million classic car museum is near Chipping Norton.

The 63-hectare project is the brainchild of Peter Mullin, a classic car collector from California, who built the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA.
