Hip Hop Hall of Fame Museum & Hotel issues RFQ, delays ground-breaking to 2021

The Hip Hop Hall of Fame Museum & Hotel will issue an RFQ review of Architectural and Interior design firms on July 1.

The museum and hotel project will select an architect and design firm in late summer this year. The project hopes to break ground in mid-2021 and open in late 2023 according to Cision.

The Hip Hop Hall of Fame Museum & Hotel was originally going to build its site in Harlem after winning a bid for a major Harlem building. However, a larger space became available in Midtown Manhattan and so the project moved.

Ground-breaking delayed to 2021

The project moved its ground-breaking to 2021 because of restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Founder JT Thompson said that it was “prudent” to move the ground-breaking since only essential construction is currently taking place.

However, the project does hope to be an integral part of rebuilding the local economy by providing construction jobs, new businesses and new jobs in hospitality and entertainment.

The project is instead completing the acquisition of the development site and filing for the first ‘Hip Hop IPO Private Stock Offering’. This will provide ownership to investors as well as individuals such as artists, athletes, celebrities, record companies and more.

Multi-purpose attraction

Designed to include a museum, hotel, residential apartments, retail mall and live entertainment venue, the Hip Hop Hall of Fame & Museum will be a huge attraction for New York.

The entertainment venue is expected to hold over 150 events year year. The mission of the project is to ‘Preserve, Archive, Exhibit, Educate, and Showcase Hip Hop Music & Culture from around the World.’

Since its inception in the 1990s, the project has worked on community outreach programs and helped create the Hip Hop Hall of Fame TV Awards Show.

The Hip Hop Hall of Fame Museum & Hotel is part of a trend of ‘Museum Hotels’. Museums around the world are adding accommodation to entice visitors to extend their stay.
