Imagine Leisure and LDP collaborate to help Dutch city of Vaals realise tourism potential

It sits just five minutes from the spot where three countries – The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany – converge. Yet the small Dutch city of Vaals has previously had difficulty persuading the many tourists who descend on ‘Three Nations Point’ to visit the heart of town. There are hopes a new attraction can change that.

City authorities asked Imagine Leisure to create a concept that will encourage people from a wider area to visit the city and boost Vaals tourism. Based on a market analysis from Leisure Development Partners (LDP) and a meeting with stakeholders and the municipality, a concept for an attraction was created by Imagine Leisure. This will be centred on the city hall of Vaals.

A number of aspects were taken into account in designing the experience. This included the monumental status of the building and the history of the location. There was also a request to strengthen other local facilities like restaurants, retail and hotels. And ultimately, the concept had to be commercially exploitable.

Immersion and theming to boost Vaals tourism

Imagine Leisure explored the rich history of the city and the surrounding region, which is part of the southern province of Limburg. The building was created by Sir von Clermont, who started a factory producing fabrics and sheets. Because of the business this generated for Vaals, the town was shaped slowly. The story of Sir von Clermont will be central to the attraction Imagine is creating.

The first part of the experience, lasting around 45 minutes, will lead visitors from room to room through immersive scenes. The second part of the attraction will be a walk-through experience, taking guests deeper into the story. An exciting finish is promised.

A themed restaurant provides the opportunity for food, drink and reflection at the end of the tour. There will also be a gift shop and some themed rooms available for commercial use.

The business case for the attraction concept was based on calculations provided by LDP. Shown here are some the designs and sketches provided by Kinetic Creative. An opening date and operator will be announced once the project wins public approval.
