Chick Russell & Company and Immersive Arts take on New Orleans park redevelopment

The Louisiana theme park only operated for five years before Hurricane Katrina hit

Chick Russell & Company, Immersive Arts and Henry Consulting, have announced a new development set to take place at Jazzland, a former theme park chain property.

On the site of the former Six Flags New Orleans theme park, a new mixed-use destination property called Bayou Phoenix is planned for construction. As the first of its kind in Louisiana, Bayou Phoenix will provide state-of-the-art facilities and location-based entertainment for the neighbourhood as well as for the city of New Orleans as a whole.

An indoor and outdoor waterpark, two hotels, a specialised sports complex, all-purpose sports fields, a shopping and dining area, and a sizable family entertainment centre are currently planned as amenities for visitors. Additionally, a film studio is slated to use space on the property, enabling New Orleans to serve as a hub for the film industry, much like Atlanta, Georgia, has done.

Multi-faceted effort

TKTMJ, Inc. and Henry Consulting are in charge of overseeing Bayou Phoenix’s development work. The design leads for the master planning and concept development of the entire destination are Chick Russell & Company and Immersive Arts. For the water park, hotel, retail and sports complexes, further consulting and feasibility support has been provided by additional firms.

Chick Russell said: “Chick Russell & Company, as well as the Immersive Arts team, are honoured to work on a project that will provide economic opportunities and growth for local residents, a community still impacted by Hurricane Katrina from seventeen years ago.

“We are thrilled to be developing a creative new concept that combines a water park, two hotels, a sports complex, a family entertainment centre, retail and dining, and a media studio into a totally unique and exciting set of experiences in New Orleans.”

The project team intends to announce more details about Bayou Phoenix and make the conceptual 3D masterplan renderings publically available in the coming months.
