intu is planning an €800 million (£690m) retail and leisure resort in Spain, called intu Costa del Sol. The resort will feature theme park attractions, an aquarium, open-air skiing, and hotels.

Located in Torremolinos, Málaga, intu Costa del Sol is scheduled to open in 2023. The 2.5 million-square-foot project is the first of its kind, and will combine hospitality, leisure and retail.

intu Costa del Sol will feature more than 20 leisure activities, more than 70 restaurants, two hotels, a beach club, and a 5000-person concert venue.

It will be comprised of eight neighbourhoods, and will also boast extensive parks and gardens, an all-year-round circus, and Spain’s largest urban farm.

In September, intu announced the development had been given the green light. It was awarded a General ‘PGOU’ License (Plan General de Ordenación Urbana).

The project can now progress to its next stage, with work set to start in 2020.

“This significant milestone opens the door to the next stage of the project,” said Matthew Roberts, intu chief executive.

“intu Costa del Sol will be a resort like no other, bringing together international brands and global visitors in an unforgettable location surrounded by the very best in entertainment and leisure.

“We are having positive discussions with brands eager to join the scheme, as well as potential partners to help bring the project to fruition.”

intu Costa del Sol is set to open in 2023. It is expected to welcome more than 23 million visitors each year, both international and domestic tourists.

Martin Breeden, development director, said: “The concept at intu Costa del Sol is to develop a world-class retail-based resort with a heavy leisure component, hotels, and outstanding public realm space.”

Earlier this year, HYPD Arena popped up at intu Lakeside with esports, virtual reality esports and experiences, and a retro arcade.
