Exhibitions: American Exhibitions, Inc. Names Dr. Heather Gill-Robinson as Director of Science & Education for its “Mummies of the World” Exhibition Debuting in 2010

News

American Exhibitions, Inc., one of the largest, privately-funded exhibitioners in the United States and presenters of the upcoming "Mummies of the World" exhibition, is honored to welcome Dr. Heather Gill Robinson, world-renowned anthropologist and Forensic Archaeologist, to its highly-regarded team of professionals involved with this extraordinary exhibit.  Dr. Robinson will serve as the exhibition’s Scientific & Educational Director, and as such will oversee all scientific, educational and curriculum content for the exhibit and its treasured collections.

Dr. Gill-Robinson is highly regarded and quite renowned within the "mummy studies" community and has recently returned from the EURAC Mummy Congress in Bolzano, Italy where she and the finest scientists in the world presented numerous academic papers and findings on various aspects of mummy studies; experimental archaeology, taphonomy, forensic studies of mummies, and carbon-dating procedures…..a dream for the CSI enthusiast in all of us!

Dr. Gill-Robinson will oversee and develop, in concert with educators, cultural experts and historians, the very best of scientific, educational, historical and cultural content for the "Mummies of the World" presentation to complement the exhibit; including lectures, panels, educational programming for all ages, in-exhibit  interactives and hands-on-activities.

Dr. Gill-Robinson  is co-editor and multiple-chapter author of Mummy Studies: An Evidence-Based Approach, to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2009.  She has published numerous academic articles and book chapters on various aspects of mummy studies, experimental archaeology, taphonomy, heritage management and the ethics and public perceptions of the display of human remains.  Her work has also been reported in several popular publications in both North America and Europe, including National Geographic, New Scientist, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Abenteuer Archäologie, and National Geographic Kids (German edition). Dr. Gill-Robinson has also been featured in documentaries airing in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe for National Geographic, the BBC and the Discovery Channel, as well as appearing in several documentaries and news reports in Germany.  She has presented numerous conference papers and public lectures related to mummy studies and teaches one of the only comprehensive mummy studies courses in the world.

"Mummies of the World" is the largest mummy exhibition ever to tour the United States.  "Visitors will embark on an exciting and historical journey around the globe, with mummies representing several continents and spanning thousands of years and will include 70 human, animal and reptilian mummies gathered from the four corners of the world, " said Dr. Wilfried Rosendahl, Curator of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum, Mannheim, Germany.  Unlike exhibits which feature only Egyptian mummies, this remarkable and compelling exhibition demonstrates the different processes of mummification and serves to educate visitors as to their respective cultures.  The collection includes ancient mummies and important artifacts from Asia, Oceania, South America and Europe, as well as ancient Egypt, and demonstrates how mummification can be a natural process; one which occurs in hot, dry desert sands, in eternal ice, in moors and bogs and even, amazingly, in dry cellars.

Never in history has there been such an important collection of mummies and artifacts.  Dignified, reverent and scholarly, "Mummies of the World" exhibition melds science, culture and history, while utilizing state of the art scientific and forensic research.

"Mummies of the World", presented by American Exhibitions, Inc. in association with the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums, Mannheim, Germany, will commence it’s limited three year engagement in major science centers and museums in July of  2010.
