The Museum of London has issued a £140 million EOI for the first phase of construction work for its new site.
The Museum of London is due to move to a new site in Smithfields Market in 2024, where it will make its home in a historic Victorian building.
The deadline for the expression of interest (EOI) is the end of May 2020 and the museum will then shortlist four or five contractors. Invitations to tender are likely to be given in August.
This first phase is worth £140 million and will include initial strip out and structural works, as well as repairs to the outside of the building, alongside refurbishment and M&E work. The museum is expected to be completed in 2024.
Details of the EOI can be found here.
A new museum for London
Sharon Ament, the Director of the Museum of London, gave attendees at blooloopLIVE UK 2019 a glimpse of the plans for the new site in this iconic building.
When it moves to its new home, the Museum of London will celebrate the existing architecture of the market and aims to keep a sense of the historic location. The new site is in a busy and bustling part of the city, which Ament said is a perfect home for a museum of the people, with deep connections to the city and its inhabitants.
Ament also explained how the museum has committed to consulting with and engaging 100,000 Londoners as part of the process of developing a new museum for the city.
Stanton Williams, Asif Khan and Julian Harrap Architects are designing the new £332 million Museum of London project. The existing building, near St. Paul’s & the Barbican, will be demolished, and a new concert hall erected in its place.
The coronavirus pandemic has changed the timeline for the new Museum of London project. Work was initially expected to begin in October 2020.
