PortAventura World has announced that the entire resort is now carbon neutral, making the theme park in Spain a benchmark for sustainable tourism in Europe.

PortAventura World is aiming to minimise its environmental footprint, and has already opened the first zero-emission hotel, Colorado Creek.

It has now extended this to the entire resort, including all facilities and operations of theme parks, hotels, convention centre and offices.

PortAventura World will now offset 100 percent of the direct emissions generated, making it the first carbon-neutral themed resort.

In 2019, 100 percent of the electricity consumed in the resort came exclusively from renewable energy sources without CO2 emissions.

PortAventura World is also installing a large solar energy plant to supply energy to the whole resort, with the project set to launch in 2021.

It will be the largest self-consumption photovoltaic plant in a resort in Europe with an installed capacity of 7.5 MWp, and will generate a third of the electricity consumed at PortAventura.

The plant will stop 4,000 tonnes of CO2 every year from being emitted, which is equivalent to the amount of CO2 that would be absorbed by 930,000 trees

As part of the resort’s green initiatives, it will eliminate plastics by 2020, continuing its drive towards a more sustainable future.

The economic equivalent of the carbon credits will go to protect and conserve one of the most important migration corridors on the planet, located on the coast of Guatemala.

“The carbon-neutral resort project is integrated into the global corporate responsibility strategy that guides the company’s decision-making to continue being a benchmark in sustainable tourism,” said Choni Fernández, Director of Corporate Responsibility at PortAventura World.

“Our strategic approach also demands that we integrate compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), defined in the 2030 Agenda, into our management in order to continue generating value.”

PortAventura World recently announced a partnership with football league LaLiga to invest €150 million in football-themed attractions.
