Attraction design and AV specialist, Sarner International, has created an interactive visitor centre at the Cittadella on the Maltese Island of Gozo.

The centre is part of the Maltese government’s ongoing plans to restore the Cittadella as a World Heritage site and museum.

Over a thousand years before the Roman Empire, the Phoenicians established Gozo as a centre for trade. Over the years the fortifications were improved and extended before finally falling into disuse and decay.

Sarner had the challenge of creating the centre in the Citadella’s abandoned water storage reservoirs.

With no historical objects available to display, the company has instead created a complete audiovisual experience.

There are three main areas: the exhibition area, the main show area and, finally, a spectacular 360-degree wrap-around projection and sound show.

The exhibition area is divided into seven zones. From here, visitors approach the main show area via a tunnel. The main show area can accommodate a maximum of 30 people per show. The performance takes just over 8 minutes. Furthermore, each multi-language zone has interactive display content, with a complete walk-through.

Finally, the climax of the experience is the grand show finale. Sixteen projectors are used to light up the interior of a huge, domed water reservoir.

Sarner selected AV Stumpfl’s Wings Engine Stage system to deliver the content. In addition, image blending and warping was manually implemented by Sarner’s technicians using Wings VIOSO.

“We’re using technology to visually tell the stories of the people of Cittadella, its land and items of cultural significance,” explains Ross Magri, Managing Director of Sarner.

“Our technicians have designed an incredible journey; all possible thanks to the reliable, failsafe technology of AV Stumpfl Wings.”

Within three months of opening, the centre had already welcomed 100,000 visitors.
