Super 78, the award-winning attractions design studio, has announced that 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: An Interactive Adventure has been nominated for a 2020 Producers Guild of America Innovation Award.

Super 78 Studios is pleased to announce that the Geppetto-powered attraction, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: An Interactive Adventure, has been nominated for a new award from the prestigious Producers Guild of America (PGA). The attraction, which recently made its debut at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, is up for the PGA’s Innovation Award.

In September, the PGA announced the creation of this new award, which will be a part of the 31st Annual Producers Guild Awards, saying, “the Innovation Award will be bestowed upon the production of a noteworthy, impactful new media program that significantly elevates the audience’s viewing experience.”

Recognising innovation

The award is designed to recognise distinctive, inventive and impactful work, which expands the conventions of program format, content, audience interaction, production technique and delivery.

Super 78’s interactive character experience, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, is powered by the studio’s award-winning real-time animation system, Geppetto. This is not the first time that Geppetto has enjoyed awards recognition, as it also won the 2016 THEA for Innovation Technology for Super 78’s Sponge Bob Show, also at Moody Gardens.

The final winner of the PGA Innovation Award will be revealed during a ceremony on 18 January 2020, in Los Angeles. Super 78 is in good company on the shortlist of 16 entries, which also features projects by Dreamworks, Universal Studios, ILM/Lucasfilm and Netflix, and more.

A successful year

The studio has enjoyed a successful 2019, with the debut of 20,000 Leagues, as well as the newly-launched Dino Tour at China Dinosaurland, the company’s largest “Immersion Tunnel” attraction to date.

Super 78 is currently launching around two attractions per year, on average, and has three more ready to go in 2020.  This will take its total number of installed attractions to 20 by the end of next year.

Brent Young, Super 78’s Creative Director says, “We strive for continued innovation in every attraction we create and having that recognized by a group as prestigious as the Producers Guild of America is a wonderful honour for all of us at Super 78.”

Super 78’s Geppetto-powered live interactive character experiences are being enjoyed by audiences at locations around the globe. This includes Donkey Live! at Universal Studios Singapore, The Smurfs Village Playhouse at Motiongate Theme Park in Dubai, the all-new 20,000 Leagues attraction at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas, and another new Geppetto show that will debut in China in 2020.

In addition to this, in autumn 2019 the Television Academy featured Geppetto at two of its EMMY events, and the company has also announced a partnership with the Microsoft Surface.

Dina Benadon, CEO of Super 78, says: “Being nominated for this new Innovation award by the Producers Guild of America is incredibly humbling for us, especially considering the other nominees in the category.”

Last week, Super 78 also launched its latest flying theatre attraction, Flying Over Indonesia, which can be found at the newly-opened Trans Studio Bali.
