RFP - Alexandria Zoo 10-year strategic development plan

The City of Alexandria has issued a request for qualification statements and proposals to help define Alexandria Zoo‘s mission in the 21st century and boost visitor numbers.

Alexandria Zoological Park, Louisiana, is an urban zoo founded in 1926 and is currently home to 500 animals representing approximately 160 species. The 23-acre facility includes the Zoo campus and adjacent parking areas.

Visitor numbers reached their peak in 1999 at over 200,000 but then began to fall away until the completion of major renovations to the South American zone. This had an immediate impact and annual attendance is currently around the 165,000 mark.

The zoo is looking to create a ten-year strategic development plan encompassing the entire site. This includes a master plan, maintenance and operational sustainability plan, business plan and a competitive analysis of the Zoo’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threat (S.W.O.T.).

The zoo is seeking an experienced consultant planning team able to deliver this level of comprehensive analysis specific to a zoological facility. The selected consultant(s) may also need to procure the services of other qualified firms to carry out the full scope of works.

A key requirement is that the proposals take into account the Zoo’s fundamental goals, namely, the conservation, exhibition and interpretation of an exotic collection of wildlife, that meet both current and future standards as measured by the community, United States Department of Agriculture, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

The outline Scope of Work includes:

  • summary analysis of the existing facility including infrastructure, attendance, visitor profile and local impact.
  • strategic development plan including SWOT analysis, market analysis and business plan
  • master plan including concept development, exhibit plan/organizational theme, visitor amenities/guest services and education interpretive plan
