The London Resort is about to begin a major public consultation, publishing more details of the ambitious theme park development, set to open in 2024.
Two theme parks will include six themed lands with themed rides and attractions as well as entertainment, e-Sports, a water park, retail, dining and accommodation and venues for conferences and conventions.
PY Gerbeau, the London Resort’s CEO, says, “The London Resort represents a unique opportunity to bring a thrilling and exciting global entertainment destination to the UK with a breadth of facilities.”
Construction is planned to start in 2022, with the first theme park ‘gate’ set to open in 2024 and the second by 2029.
Public consultation
The public consultation will run from 27 July until 21 September and will include webinars, telephone surgeries and online Q&A.
Around 8,000 people have already participated in earlier consultations, as well as key stakeholders.
On Monday 27 July, The London Resort will publish “comprehensive reports, plans, analysis and data” which will be available here: https://consultation.londonresort.info/ . The documents will detail the economic, environmental and infrastructure benefits of the development.
A boost to the local economy will include an estimated 9,000 direct and 20,000 indirect jobs to be created for the operation of the Resort within the first year. This could increase to 17,000 direct and over 35,000 indirect jobs after 15 years. In addition to part time and seasonal roles there will be a need for skilled hi-tech, engineering and management roles.
Gerbeau says, “It will generate multi-billion-pound investment, thousands of jobs, and will transform a largely brownfield site into one of the most exciting entertainment destinations in the world…
“We have listened, analysed and considered all the feedback given to us through extensive consultations. It is the first project of its kind to be designated a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project so while it’s incredibly important for local communities to continue contributing, it is also important for the nation to have its say.”
Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of the plans. As well as the positive economic impact for the local area, there are plans for a green network of amenity areas, pedestrian and cycle routes and parkland. Sustainable transport links will be enhanced with two ferry terminals and riverside wharf along with new transport interchanges.
The natural features of the site have been integrated into the design with a large proportion of the peninsula landscape to remain undeveloped. Some areas will be “enhanced principally for wildlife and biodiversity benefits”. “Quiet zones” will be created for the public and resort visitors, and local public rights of way and a green network will be included to improve access to the river for all.
Gerbeau says, “As well as maximising new, immersive and interactive technologies, our aim is also to be one of the most sustainable major theme parks in the world, pursuing an operational net zero emissions goal. Sustainability is at the core of our vision and we continue to explore new and innovative ways of integrating sustainable and low-carbon principles into every area of design and operation of the Resort.”
