Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea Unveil Development Plans to 2020

Oriental Land Co., Ltd. has revealed a raft of development plans for Tokyo Disneyland® and Tokyo DisneySea® Parks to be completed by the end of the financial year 2020.

Plans include expansion of Fantasyland, major new Beauty and the Beast attraction, new live entertainment theatre and new simulator attraction at Mediterranean Harbor.

Originally, the company had set the target year for achieving "a constant attendance level of over 30 million Park visitors annually due to sustained Guest satisfaction" at 2023.

This has now been brought forward, thanks partly to the faster-than-expected increase in visitor numbers since those targets were set back in 2014.

An annual investment of 50 billion Japanese yen will finance large-scale development of new areas of the Parks and new major attractions, as well as in enhancing the guest services and facilities.

Tokyo Disneyland Facilities Development Plan

Grand Circuit Raceway, StarJets and some food facilities and shops currently in Tomorrowland are to be shut permanently to make way for the proposed redevelopment. The expansion of Fantasyland will include a theatre for live performances and a new area featuring a major Beauty and the Beast attraction.

Neighbouring Tomorrowland and Toontown, will get a new attraction and a Disney Character greeting facility. 

Total investment for the development of the new area and facilities is expected to be about 75 billion Japanese yen.

Beauty and the Beast Area (working title)  

This new area opening in Fantasyland will include the Beast’s castle, featuring a major new attraction unique to Japan, and the village where Belle lives.

Ride  Duration: About 8 minutes  Description: Guests board enchanted serving dishes that dance in rhythm to the film’s well-known music and follow Belle on a romantic musical adventure inside the enchanted Castle where she dances her way into the heart of the Beast, just in time to break the fateful spell. Guests will feel like they have entered right into the film.  Opening: Estimated Spring 2020   Investment Amount: Estimated 32 billion yen

Live Entertainment Theatre (as yet unnamed)

Opening in a new area of Fantasyland and costing an estimated 17 billion yen, this will beTokyo Disneyland's first full-scale indoor theatre for live entertainment.

New Attraction themed to the Disney film, Big Hero 6

The new ride-type attraction, with an estimated budget of 6 billion yen, will open in Tomorrowland in Spring 2020 (estimated). The lovable robot Baymax, from the Disney film, Big Hero 6, invites guests to join their own personal healthcare companion for an exciting musical “whip ride” that swings them unpredictably round and round   

Also, for the first time in either Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea, a shop themed to outer space and selling popcorn in a variety of flavours will open next to the new attraction.

New Disney Character Greeting Facility (name to be determined)

Toontown will see the opening of a new Disney Character greeting facility where guests can meet Minnie Mouse dressed as a fashion designer.  After walking through Minnie’s design studio and her work area featuring interactive elements, visitors can enjoy photo opportunities with Minnie in person.

To make way for the new development areas and the new facilities, Grand Circuit Raceway will close in January 2017 and StarJets will close in autumn-winter 2017.

Tokyo DisneySea Facilities Development Plan

A large scale, simulator attraction will open at Mediterranean Harbour in Tokyo DisneySea. In addition, plans are being developed for new versions of current attractions and entertainment programmes.

 New Attraction at Mediterranean Harbour 

Soarin’ (working title), a new simulator attraction, will open at Mediterranean Harbour in Tokyo DisneySea. Already a popular attraction with visitors at other Disney parks, it will be presented with original scenes and new visuals. A tentative opening date of 2019 is predicted for this 18bn yen (estimated) attraction.

Further investment will be made in staff development and maintenance of the environments at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea Parks.
