Universal Parks & Resorts has announced that Tom Mehrmann will take on the role of President and General Manager for Universal Beijing Theme Park and Resort.

Currently under construction, the facility is being positioned as a world-class entertainment destination.

Tom Mehrmann will spearhead the continued development of Universal Beijing as well as overseeing its opening and ongoing daily operations.

For the past 13 years, he has served as Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong’s marine life and animal theme park, Ocean Park.  During his tenure, the park embarked on a redevelopment programme that led to record-breaking visitor numbers and annual revenue growth.

Mehrmann has many years experience in the attractions industry, including stints at Knotts Berry Farm and Six Flags.

“He has exactly what we need to help create a world-class theme park entertainment destination.”

In his new role he will report to Page Thompson, President and Chief Operating Officer –International, Universal Parks & Resorts.

“Tom will bring tremendous industry knowledge, business acumen and international experience to our project,” commented Thompson.  “He has exactly what we and our partners need to help create a world-class theme park entertainment destination.”

The $3.3 billion Universal Beijing is being constructed in partnership with the Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Co., Ltd., a consortium of five Beijing state-owned enterprises, and Universal Parks & Resorts.

The initial phase of the resort will occupy a 147-hectare site in the Tongzhou District of the capital. Alongside the theme park, there will also be a Universal CityWalk entertainment complex. Guest accommodation will be provided by two hotels, including the first-ever Universal-themed hotel.

The theme park will reportedly feature all-new attractions designed specifically for China. There will also be a number of Universal’s most popular themed entertainment experiences from around the world.
