The Tower of David Museum, located within the iconic citadel of Jerusalem, has opened an adventure rope park, Towers in the Air.

The Tower of David Museum in Jerusalem has opened a rope adventure park called Towers in the Air, in order to attract visitors during COVID-19 by offering an outdoor experience.

“Climb, walk, grapple with Jerusalem’s 4,000-year history within the magnificent ancient citadel – whilst rappelling, climbing ladders, whizzing by on an omega [zip-line] and more,” the Tower of David Museum said.

“Have you ever imagined yourself walking on a tightrope strung between King Herod’s tower and the Ottoman walls of the Old City? Or walking mid-air under the shadow of the iconic minaret? Have you thought about climbing the Crusader walls?”

Towers in the Air, situated between the ancient towers of Jerusalem’s citadel, features seven stations with ropes, ladders, zip-lines and climbing walls.

The rope adventure park is part of the Tower of David’s $40m renovation project to preserve and conserve the citadel and archaeological park. The museum broke ground on the development in October 2020.

The Tower of David Museum offers an exploration of Jerusalem’s complex 4,000-year history. The renewal project will double the size of the museum to 20,000 square metres.

It also includes a new visitor centre and café, as well as seven new galleries, additional exhibition spaces and elevators to make the citadel accessible.

In addition, the museum is reimagining the site’s archaeological excavations, turning them into new spaces. The Tower of David Museum will remain open to the public over the next two years during the project.

“Despite the current crisis and the aura of uncertainty I see this project as affirming the vibrant future, innovation and resilience inherent in the city of Jerusalem,” director Eilat Lieber said.
