The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the global alliance of regional associations, national federations, zoos and aquariums, has announced that registration for the 75th WAZA Virtual Annual Conference is now open.

The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) conference is set to take place virtually from October 12 to 15, 2020.

The 2020 WAZA annual conference is being held digitally in response to the challenges of COVID-19. Registration is free for all members of WAZA, and for non-members it is as follows:

  • Non-WAZA member but a member of WAZA-recognised associations – €100
  • Non-WAZA member and non-member of a WAZA-recognised association – €200

The virtual conference will be available through WAZA’s WHOVA mobile application, which can also be accessed on desktops.

WAZA will feature live sessions and recordings

Users can join live sessions or watch recordings of sessions, with topics of discussion including lessons learned over the past months and how the global community has adapted to the challenges of COVID-19.

WAZA is excited about this year’s virtual format, which will make the conference more accessible and inclusive to members and the wider community.

The 75th WAZA Virtual Annual Conference is open to all staff of WAZA members, and to members of WAZA’s recognised regional and national associations.

For more information and to register, you can visit waza2020.org. For any questions, contact WAZA on conference@waza.org.

Conference goes digital amid COVID-19 challenges

Meanwhile, WAZA recently announced the updated version of its Animal-Visitor Interaction Guidelines, which are based on scientific recommendations from the World Zoo and Aquarium Animal Welfare Strategy.

The guidance aims to promote animal-visitor interactions that put animal welfare first, and look at five key elements that must be taken into consideration when interactions between animals and visitors take place.

WAZA also previously released a statement on Netflix documentary Tiger King.
