Pirates of Speelunker Cave puts visitors in the middle of a pirate treasure hunt thwarted by ‘Speelunkers’.

Six Flags Over Texas has opened a new state-of-the-art ride called Pirates of Speelunker Cave, a reimagining of one of the park’s first attractions, The Cave.

Pirates of Speelunker Cave puts guests in the middle of a pirate treasure hunt thwarted by original characters called ‘Speelunkers’.

Riders will experience 17 new scenes during the ride that feature state-of-the-art cinematic projection with immersive sets and animatronics.

“They’re going to go through 17 unique scenes that are going to have cinematic projection screens, physical sets, and animatronics that really tell the story,” Brad Malone, marketing and communications manager for Six Flags Over Texas, told NBC 5.

“So it’s going to be completely immersive as you ride through,” he added.

The attraction’s new entry plaza and queue feature a custom soundtrack and nautical theming, as well as ‘wanted’ posters of the pirates that guests will encounter.

Pirates of Speelunker Cave features 64 characters, a nod to The Cave’s opening in 1964. The Cave operated until 1991. The new ride replaces Yosemite Sam and the Gold River Adventure.

“As the world’s first regional theme park, Six Flags Over Texas has built a solid reputation of providing innovative thrills and lifelong memories for generations of families,” Ron McKenzie, park president, said in 2021.

“What better way to celebrate our park’s 60th anniversary than by announcing a brand-new attraction that pays homage to our past and launches us into the future.”

Meanwhile, Six Flags has reported earnings for the first quarter of this year, revealing that attendance increased by 25 percent compared to the same period in 2021. Revenue for Q1 increased by 68 percent compared to the prior-year quarter.
