Leslie Jones Architecture and McKinney Group have submitted plans to Trafford Council for a £60m surf lagoon called Modern Surf Manchester.

Modern Surf Manchester will boast realistic waves powered by Wavegarden, creators of artificial wave technology already used at UK surf attractions Surf Snowdonia and The Wave.

Leslie Jones Architecture and McKinney Group have submitted plans to Trafford Council for the £60m Modern Surf Manchester project, which was designed with landscape specialists Exterior Architecture.

Located on an abandoned industrial site close to the Trafford Centre, Modern Surf is set to become the UK’s most innovative simulated surf attraction. LJA plans to merge surf culture with the site’s industrial past.

The proposals from LJA include the integration of skating, bouldering and other activities at a ‘cluster of hub buildings’. The attraction will also include a unique F&B outlet, surf shop and pop-up beach bars.

“The designs include street artwork collaborations and a generous interactive landscape public realm for workout and play,” LJA said.

“We are really excited to have submitted our plans to Trafford Council, off the back of months of discussions with the local community, stakeholders and planning officers,” said Billy McKinney, managing director at McKinney Group.

“TraffordCity already has a huge and growing leisure offer and we are looking forward to bringing something new to the area that is thrilling, interactive and accessible to be enjoyed by surfers of all abilities.”

“We await our application coming before Trafford Council and look forward to getting people on the waves by 2023,” McKinney added.

TraffordCity is owned and managed by Peel L&P. “It’s fantastic to see the plans for this unique and world-class facility move forwards, following the public consultation period,” said James Whittaker, executive development director at Peel L&P.

Therme Group is also building a £250m wellbeing resort at TraffordCity in Manchester. The company is creating Germany’s largest wellbeing resort and plans to develop the concept in other cities in the UK.
