Media artist and director Refik Anadol is a pioneer in the field of machine intelligence aesthetics. During his fellowship at Google AMI in 2016, he came up with the terms “AI Data Painting and Sculpture.” He presently resides in Los Angeles, California, where he owns and runs Refik Anadol Studio as well as RAS LAB, the research practice of the studio. This is focused on finding and creating cutting-edge approaches to artificial intelligence and data narratives.
His portfolio explores what it means to be a human in the era of artificial intelligence as well as the opportunities and problems that ubiquitous computing has brought forth for humanity. He investigates the profound ways in which the dominance of technology in our daily lives is altering our perception and experience of time and place. Anadol is fascinated by the ways in which artificial intelligence and the digital era enable a new aesthetic approach to produce rich, immersive settings that provide a dynamic sense of place.
Refik Anadol’s projects have been recognised with a number of honours and awards, such as the SEGD Global Design Award, Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence Artist Residency Award, UCLA Art+Architecture Moss Award, Microsoft Research’s Best Vision Award, Lumen Prize Award, iF Gold Award, D&AD Pencil Award, German Design Award, Columbia University’s Breakthrough in Storytelling Award, and the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts Award.
His site-specific audio/visual performances have been featured at iconic landmarks, museums and festivals across the globe, including the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Hammer Museum, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Artechouse, The Centre Pompidou, The Portland Building, Daejeon Museum of Art, Florence Biennale, Art Basel, OFFF Festival, International Digital Arts Biennial Montreal, Ars Electronica Festival, and more.
