Dolls’ House Kids Tour, Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem

Besides being home to the most extensive collection of work of Frans Hals’ paintings, this museum contains the magnificent dolls’ house that belonged to 18th century art collector Sara Rothé. This small-scale replica of an Amsterdam merchant’s house of the period is home to about 1,000 miniature household objects and furnishings and is particularly popular with children.

Challenge
To create and build a tour in Dutch especially for young visitors to bring alive the different rooms in this beautifully crafted Dutch house.

Solution
The tour on our MediaPacker™ guide takes children, in school groups as well as with their families, around the museum to look at similar objects and at paintings related to the dolls’ house. Animated figures from the dolls’ house give explanations on-screen about some of the paintings and objects.

What We Are Proud Of
This tour has been well received, and offers a complementary service that has become an important education tool, expanding the horizon of visiting children beyond a loved exhibit and into the wider context of the museum’s treasures. The tour is included in the entrance price and the usage is high.
