Dulwich Picture Gallery, London

Founded in 1811, Dulwich Picture Gallery is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. Today, alongside its Permanent Collection of Baroque masterpieces, the Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub hosting some of the UK’s leading exhibitions, and stages a wide-ranging programme of public events, practical art and community engagement.

Challenge
For both its permanent and temporary exhibitions, the gallery was looking for a flexible technological solution that would allow them to upload their own productions fast and flexibly onto multimedia devices.

Solution
Imagineear’s technology and service solutions are built with client needs of this nature at their heart. We provided Dulwich Picture Gallery initially with a flexible number of MediaPacker™ devices onsite; trained onsite staff on producing and uploading content; helped with interface design for the permanent tour and the initial batch of temporary tours; and offered best practice advice for onsite operations and content creation. More recently, the Gallery has upgraded to MPti™ players and Imagineear has designed and developed a tour interface that has been successfully utilised for several temporary exhibitions including Sargent: The Watercolours.

What We Are Proud Of
The onsite guides have provided an improved interpretation offer to visitors to the gallery. As a result, usage of the pre-recorded tours has materially increased year on year, resulting in a new and growing revenue stream for the gallery.

Client Testimonial
Ellie Manwell, Communications Manager at Dulwich Picture Gallery, who introduced the use of mobile multimedia interpretation within the Gallery said:

“We contacted Imagineear to find a user-friendly device that would also hold video content. These players have been very successful and visitors find them easy to use. I would certainly encourage other galleries to investigate the use of the player. They’re very simple devices and create a much richer visitor experience.”
