Oakland Zoo’s $80 million expansion project is well underway along with its brand new gondola system.
According to a CBS feature, the system is being installed to give visitors access to the new California Trail Exhibit. The exhibit is sited on a high ridge above the main zoo.
Sixteen 8-person gondolas will carry visitors above the Oakland hills, affording far-reaching views across the entire Bay Area.
It is reportedly the largest urban gondola system in Northern California.
The exhibit will be home to numerous new animals, all native to the region at some time.
These include black bears, mountain lions and even jaguars which were found in California until 1857.
The zoo’s expanded offering is expected to give San Diego Zoo a run for its money.
California Trail is slated to open in summer 2018.
