Universal Studios Japan has officially launched its Super Nintendo World land, with the opening ceremony attended by Shigeru Miyamoto.

Universal Studios Japan has finally launched the Nintendo-themed expansion after delaying it in response to COVID-19. It is the first of four attractions in Japan, Singapore, Orlando and Hollywood.

Shigeru Miyamoto, video game designer, producer and game director at Nintendo, attended the opening ceremony of Super Nintendo World on March 18 at USJ.

Miyamoto said (via Japan Times): “This is an area where everyone from children to adults can use their five senses to enjoy.”

“I want people from around the world to visit once the coronavirus pandemic is over,” added Miyamoto, who was joined by USJ president JL Bonnier.

Ayumu Yamamoto, marketing communication manager at USJ, said: “You’ll find life-sized piranha plants and Bowser, and you’ll see what it is like to be Mario.”

“It took almost a year longer than we had expected to open this place, and we are really glad,” Yamamoto added at a preview on Wednesday (March 17).

Super Nintendo World is a highly themed and immersive land inspired by the worlds, characters and adventures of Nintendo.

Visitors will get the chance to play inside their favourite video games at Super Nintendo World, the first multi-level land at Universal Studios Japan.

Guests can jump and punch Question Blocks to collect virtual coins, and can purchase a Power Up Band in order to compete with other visitors at USJ.

“Think of Super Nintendo World as a life-size, living video game where you become one of the characters. You’re not just playing the game; you’re living the game, you’re living the adventure,” said Thierry Coup, senior VP and CCO, Universal Creative.

Super Nintendo World’s rides and attractions include Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure, and Bowser Jr. Shadow Showdown. Retail and dining offerings include Kinopio’s Cafe and Yoshi’s Snack Island.
