Merlin Entertainments has launched its inaugural Engineering Academy for aspiring theme park engineers.
The initiative is initially debuting in the UK and is designed to nurture “the theme park engineers of tomorrow”, according to a press release. The academy will also provide training for Merlin’s current engineers who are looking to upskill.
The three-year programme will begin this year with a group of 12 apprentices, who will take an “immersive learning journey” that includes theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
They will have access to a structured curriculum and on-site training facilities at select Merlin attractions across the UK, such as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.

Merlin is collaborating with UK educational institutions including the JCB Academy in Rocester, New City College in east London and Essex, and East Surrey College.
“Our pioneering Engineering Academy is a testament to our resolute belief in education’s transformative power,” said Michael Jones, head of Merlin’s Engineering Academy.
“We’re not just cultivating engineers; we’re fostering innovators and pioneers who will shape the future of entertainment.
“We invite both fresh talent and existing Merlin staff to join us in this exhilarating journey of learning, growth, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.”

Fiona Eastwood, Merlin’s chief operating officer for Midway, resorts and theme parks, added: “This visionary venture is not just about roller coasters; it’s about propelling the industry into the future.”
The academy is “testament to Merlin’s dedication to inclusion, innovation, and delivering memorable joyful experiences”, Eastwood said.
“As the academy’s first apprentices step into our exhilarating world, they are on track to become the architects of excitement, ensuring safe and memorable experiences for our guests, now and into the future.”
Merlin has also launched a partnership with Tencent to create “the ultimate theme park experience of the future” at the new Legoland resorts in China.
