Susana Acle Olivo is head of veterinary and research at Bioparc Acuario de Gijón, an aquarium in Asturias, Spain. As a veterinarian, she is in charge of animal welfare at Bioparc Acuario de Gijón. She is also involved in the aquarium’s education department, giving talks in schools and universities about the importance of biodiversity.
Acle Olivo has carried out important studies on the impact of microplastics in the marine environment. She has also created the first rescue and rehabilitation centre for marine animals in the region, the Crama. Here, endangered species such as turtles and seals are cared for.

She is a reference in the local and regional media, standing out for her ability to communicate complex topics in an accessible way. In addition, she is widely recognized by her colleagues in Spain and Europe, reflecting her professional prestige.”
This year, Acle Olivo has been preparing Bioparc Acuario de Gijón for its admission to the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA). “Her involvement in conservation organizations is fundamental, and her leadership continues to be a source of inspiration and a driving force for change in marine conservation,” the nominator added.
