The National Geographic Society is opening a new and expanded Museum of Exploration at its reimagined campus in Washington, DC in 2026.
The nonprofit scientific and educational organisation will launch the 100,000-square-foot museum in mid-2026 as part of an overhaul of its headquarters.
The new museum, which replaces a previous space that closed in early 2023, will feature curated exhibitions, immersive and educational experiences powered by cutting-edge technologies, a state-of-the-art theatre, and a restaurant and retail outlet.
Per a press release, the new venue will accelerate the non-profit society’s mission to “illuminate and protect the wonder of our world”.

“The Museum of Exploration marks a historic chapter in the society’s mission to advance exploration, science, education and storytelling, bringing these experiences to life in ways that spark curiosity, create lasting memories and invite everyone to embrace their inner explorer,” said Jill Tiefenthaler, CEO of the National Geographic Society.
“We’re excited to welcome visitors to experience our mission through immersive, unforgettable moments that deepen their connection to the wonder of our world.”
Guests will enter the new museum through an 11-foot yellow border. Highlights include a 400-seat theatre that will surround visitors in audiovisuals from National Geographic films and stories, as well as a new outdoor nighttime experience featuring projection mapping, interactive media and soundscapes.
“For 136 years the National Geographic Society and its iconic yellow border have served as a global beacon for exploration, curiosity, innovation and wonder,” said Jean Case, chairman of the National Geographic Society’s board.
“This new Museum of Exploration will build on that legacy, bringing all who visit the museum exciting opportunities to virtually travel to the front lines of the unknown with our explorers and help to inspire the next generation of changemakers.”
