To lead this expansion, Gerhard Komenda has been appointed as director of nature attractions.

Komenda brings extensive knowledge in eco-conscious construction, natural materials, and visitor-centric adventure design, honed through more than 20 years spent designing and building renowned outdoor experiences.

His work features in more than 100 projects, and reimagines how visitors connect with the natural world.

Inspiring wonder

SimEx-Iwerks has been partnering with Komenda for many years, on projects such as the development and installation of Aerial Adventure Parks at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and Bronx Zoo, and the acclaimed Nature Trek at the Bronx Zoo.

Sean McAllister, senior vice president, attraction development, says: “We’re thrilled to have Gerhard on board to develop this exciting new chapter. His passion for authentic, sustainable experiences aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver innovative, family-friendly attractions that inspire wonder, both indoors and out.”

Nature-based attractions are suitable for a variety of settings where families explore, play, and connect with nature.

“This new product line will include the Nature Trek experience, no-harness canopy tours, and nature play environments,” says Komenda. “These attractions encourage hands-on exploration and active play, while supporting high capacity and durability.”

With this expansion, SimEx-Iwerks strengthens its dedication to pushing the limits of immersive entertainment by combining filmic storytelling with real-world connection.

Recently, SimEx-Iwerks partnered with Ultra-Accessible theme park Morgan’s Wonderland to develop the Ultra-Accessible 4D Magic Cinema, which features a first-of-its-kind wheelchair motion platform.
