Bedford Borough Council is expected to officially back plans for a new Universal Studios theme park and resort near Bedford, UK, while also urging the government to provide support for infrastructure development.
The local authority stated it seeks financial support to address issues related to traffic, housing demand, and noise.
In late June, Universal submitted a request to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) for planning permission, seeking to issue a Special Development Order (SDO) for the site, a former brickworks site and land at Kempston Hardwick.
Last month, the UK government launched an open consultation on the plans, which will close at midday on 31 August. This is scheduled to be discussed by the council on Thursday, covering “potentially valid concerns” from the community and councillors.
Transforming the local landscape
The proposal is for an entertainment resort complex that includes a world-class theme park with various themed lands, visitor accommodation, and a range of retail, dining, and entertainment options.
The council states that it backed the project due to its “national importance to the UK economy”. It is committed to collaborating with Universal Destinations and Experiences (UDX) and the government throughout the project.
The project is expected to bring significant economic growth and job creation for local businesses and residents, while also supporting town centre regeneration. However, the council also recognised that the development would increase housing demand and “permanently transform the existing landscape.” It will request funding from the government to expand capacity in local healthcare, housing, and infrastructure.
Although plans are in place for a four-platform railway station at Wixams and a new junction for the A421, the council seeks assurances that these proposals will mitigate other traffic impacts. Bedford Borough Council has also raised concerns about noise, particularly during the operational phase, which could involve up to 95 special events annually.
Last week, Universal shared an update on its proposed theme park resort near Bedford, UK, revealing that more than 18,000 people have expressed interest in future job opportunities.
Planning documents have revealed that the proposed UK theme park could feature the tallest rides in Europe.
