The USA’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has entered into a licence agreement to create the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Japan. Opening initially as an exhibition this September in Tokyo, a permanent space will follow at a later date.
“Rock and roll is a universal language” says Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. “Japan is the second largest music market in the world, making it the perfect place for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s first international expansion.”
The new outlet in Tokyo is expected to feature traveling exhibits from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame collection, which have already proved popular at museums and cultural centres across the United States. In the past year, some of the exhibits showcased have included:
• Louder Than Words: Rock, Power & Politics. From the moment rock and roll hit the airwaves, it’s played a crucial role in politics and social movements around the world. This exhibit celebrates the power of rock to change attitudes about peace, equality, patriotism and hope.
• Paul Simon: Words and Music. Walking fans through the singer-songwriter’s life and creative process featuring candid commentary from Simon himself.
• Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits. Photographic portraits of musicians including David Bowie, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Cher and Madonna.
• Common Ground. The Music Festival Experience. An engaging look at music festival culture. More than outdoor concerts, this exhibit highlights the community experience.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has a 21 year history in Cleveland, Ohio. It share stories of the people, events and songs that shape rock ‘n’ roll. The new attraction in Tokyo will be developed in partnership with the Japan Project Production Committee.
