Blackgang Chine, the UK’s oldest amusement park, is launching its first-ever 360-degree rotation ride, called Extinction, on 25 March.

Located on the Isle of Wight, Blackgang Chine opened in 1843. The park’s new pendulum swing reaches a height of 18 metres – almost twice the height of the resident Blackgang Smuggler.

Riders on Extinction will find themselves upside down before being launched forward to complete a 360-degree rotation.

Due to the ride’s location on a cliff edge, guests will feel like they are about to land in the sea. They will also enjoy spectacular views across the English Channel.

Dominic Wray, Blackgang Chine’s director, told the Island Echo: “This is not just any ride – it’s a testament to Blackgang Chine’s ability to innovate and provide visitors with unforgettable experiences.”

“Our rich and long heritage is a result of our commitment to pushing boundaries and staying ahead of the curve.

“This is especially vital in the current climate where we have a cost of living crisis in the UK and the travel industry is still in a period of recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Extinction was designed and built by Zamperla, a leading ride manufacturer. Additional rides and attractions at Blackgang Chine include the Evolution drop tower and the Waterforce waterslide.

Elsewhere, Alton Towers’ new indoor attraction has been given the green light, and Thorpe Park is opening its new Ghost Train ride in spring 2023.

Chessington World of Adventures has also set the opening date of its new £17 million ‘World of Jumanji’ land for 15 May.
